Give Them Grace

by Elyse M Fitzpatrick & Jessica Thompson

The other day I was listening to my kids play when I heard my eldest turn to her younger brother and say in a very stern, cranky voice “BE KIND OR YOU WILL HAVE A TIME OUT!”. My heart sank. Is that what I actually sound like? That’s not what I hoped they would learn from me when I imagined how I would parent my kids and help them to know and love Jesus... Maybe you’ve had a similar time when you’ve thought, I’m a Christian, but is my parenting really Christian?

“Give Them Grace” has been a great encouragement, and a challenge, as I try to think through how I can better model to my kids the wonderful grace of our Lord Jesus in the way I love and discipline them. Elyse and Jessica are funny, humble and wise, as first they break down our tendency to resort to legalism in our parenting. Then in the second part of the book they share how grace radically transforms parenting, as it radically transforms our own lives. It’s only when we truly know the gospel ourselves that we can share it with others, and our children are the closest neighbours we can do that for!

This book would be a great present for new parents or for parents of any aged kids. And because it’s written by a mother / grandmother duo, there are helpful reflections for grandparents too. I pray our parenting will be more gospel centred and grace filled as a result!
