The Air We Breathe by Glen Scrivener

I am a bit of a goldfish, often just existing and staring into space, oblivious to the culture that I live in. Glen Scrievener addresses my goldfish issue as universal; “goldfish don’t see water…and Christianity is the water in which you swim.” (Scrivener, 2022, 11). This engaging book has helped me to recognise how Christianity has impacted the values our society holds dear. Glen’s ability to story tell key historical moments makes this book accessible and winsome.

I love that this is a practical book, giving me some invaluable tools to assess Western culture. As I have understood more how our society is rooted in Christian values, it has helped me to engage better with those who are sceptical or ambivalent to Christianity. I have been able to appreciate the rich Christian heritage that we stand on.

This book is appropriate for believers, seekers and sceptics! Glen has an artful and nuanced ability to weave the Bible, history and cultural analysis together, making this book a great read for all. As it is clear and thought-provoking, it is a good conversation starter with those around you. After all, we could all use some help being aware of the water that we swim in.
