The Heart of Anger | Christopher Ash and Steve Midgley

It’s easy to find a reason to be angry: violence in Ukraine, senseless shootings at schools in America, the depravity of abuse in marriages or our churches, famine in war zones. But often it’s the personal anger that feels more real.

When a dear friend faces relentless suffering, or my kids embarrass me in public, something doesn’t go as I expect, or my pride is wounded by something someone says. Is it ever ok to feel angry? What about? What should I do with my anger? And what makes God angry? Does he feel anger at the same things as us?

Christopher Ash and Steve Midgley have done us a great service in considering many of these questions in their new book The Heart of Anger. First, they consider what the Bible has to say about human anger, before moving on to looking at what it has to say about God’s anger. It’s thorough and biblically sound in looking at the Bible as a whole. Yet for such a huge topic, it’s also accessible, pastoral and clear. It is a helpful book for any Christian at any point in their walk with God, as the authors show us the clear difference between our sinful, imperfect anger, and God’s perfect anger at our sin and injustice in our world. It’s hard to read without feeling challenged ourselves, but it’s written in a way that you can’t help but be struck by the amazing love of Christ. The authors show us that the only place we can find the antidote to our imperfect anger is at the cross, in the humility of Christ.
