A Foot in Two Worlds by John Chapman

The longer I’ve been a Christian, the more I find that following Jesus isn’t comfortable. In a world that urges us to chase our dreams and be true to ourselves, Jesus calls us instead to a life of self-sacrifice and continual repentance. Among my non-Christian friends, I often feel like the odd one out, or that I’m missing out because our priorities are simply different. But of course, the conflict isn’t only ‘out there’, it’s also ‘in here’. The battle between flesh and spirit rages within my own heart and thoughts.

Christians throughout the ages have experienced this tension and it is the focus of this year’s Equip classic pick, “A Foot In Two Worlds”. John Chapman (Chappo) writes like a kindly grandfather, someone who has lived with this struggle for long enough to understand it deeply and who is wise enough to point us to God’s word for answers. These truths are timeless and are just as relevant today as when the book was first written.

I was encouraged that the conflict between the old and new self is normal and expected. The apostle Paul describes his Christian life as one that requires strenuous effort; running the race, pressing on and straining forward. However, as Chappo insightfully observes, Paul never actually finished the race in his lifetime! That struck me afresh and reminded me that the task of living out our faith is never complete. It is a lifelong pursuit that will always involve effort and perseverance.

That might sound discouraging, but Chappo gently reminds us that this struggle is good, purposeful and even marked by joy. It is what God uses to shape us into Christlikeness. And we’re not left to fight alone. God is at work in us by his Spirit, empowering us from within.

I finished the book with a renewed perspective on facing trials and a fresh determination not to lose heart or give up. At the same time, I long even more for the new creation. I look forward to the day when the conflict both without and within will finally cease, and we will be made perfect in him.

If you’ve ever felt the tension of living with a foot in both worlds, this book will encourage you to keep going. If you haven’t felt that tension, and if your life looks no different to those around you, then may I gently suggest this book is especially for you.
